Frequently Asked Questions

At EHI Custom Doors, we get asked a lot of the same questions by homeowners across Toronto and the GTA. Here are real answers on pricing, installation, replacement, and everything in between. Can't find what you're looking for? Call us at 647-952-2311.

How much does it cost to replace a front door and frame?

A single custom fiberglass door starts at $2,500 installed, and a double door starts at $5,100 installed. The price includes manufacturing and installation and is not fixed. If the frame needs replacing too, the cost goes up based on your door's size and hardware. Call EHI Custom Doors at 647-952-2311 for a free, exact quote.

Can you replace a door without replacing the frame?

Yes, in most cases. If your existing frame is square, solid, and in good shape, we can install a new door slab into it. If the frame is warped, rotted, or damaged, we'll recommend replacing both for a proper fit and seal.

How much would it cost to put a door where a window currently is?

This is a bigger job than a standard door swap, since it means resizing the opening and framing it for a door instead of a window. Cost depends on your wall structure and the size of the new opening, so we'd need to see it in person to give you an accurate number. Call EHI Custom Doors at 647-952-2311 to book a free assessment.

Where can I find a company that makes fully custom fiberglass doors, including odd sizes, online or locally?

EHI Custom Doors manufactures every door in-house, including odd or non-standard sizes, right here in the GTA. Unlike ordering online from a company you'll never meet, you get a local team that measures your actual opening, builds the door to fit, and installs it themselves. Call 647-952-2311 to start.

Will a fiberglass door hold up in direct sun and high heat?

Yes. Fiberglass resists warping, cracking, and fading far better than wood or vinyl in direct sun. It won't swell or shrink with temperature changes either. Every EHI Custom Doors fiberglass door is backed by a lifetime warranty on the fiberglass itself.

Do fiberglass doors hold up well over time, and are they maintenance free?

Fiberglass doors hold up well for decades without rotting, warping, or rusting. They're low maintenance, not zero maintenance. A quick clean now and then keeps them looking new, and the finish may need refreshing after many years of sun exposure.

Wood or fiberglass, which is better for my home, including older or craftsman-style homes?

Both can look the part, even on older or craftsman-style homes. Wood has real character, but it needs regular refinishing and is more likely to warp, crack, or rot over time, especially through a Toronto winter. Fiberglass can be made with a wood-grain finish that gets you a similar look with far less upkeep. If you want the wood look without the maintenance, fiberglass is the more practical choice.

What should I do if my contractor installs a different door material than what I agreed on?

Raise it with your contractor right away and point to whatever you agreed on in writing, whether that's a contract, email, or text. This is exactly why EHI Custom Doors confirms your door's material, size, and finish in writing before we ever start building, so there's no mix-up on installation day.

Steel, composite, or fiberglass, which is better for an entry door?

Steel is the cheapest option but dents easily and can rust over time. Composite sits in the middle on price and durability. Fiberglass costs more upfront but resists dents, rust, warping, and rot, which makes it the strongest long-term choice for a Toronto climate. That's why EHI Custom Doors builds exclusively in fiberglass.

Which fiberglass door brand or manufacturer is best?

It depends on what you're looking for. Big commercial brands make solid doors, but you're limited to their pre-set sizes and styles. EHI Custom Doors manufactures every door ourselves, built to your exact opening and design, so you're not stuck choosing from a catalog. If you want a door made specifically for your home, going custom beats picking a brand off a shelf.

Can a damaged fiberglass door (dented, delaminated, or hardware-damaged) be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?

EHI Custom Doors doesn't repair doors. We replace them with custom fiberglass doors. Small scratches or a loose handle can often be sorted out by a handyperson or the hardware maker. Delamination or cracking that reaches the foam core is hard to fix properly and usually means replacement is the better long-term option. Send us photos and we'll tell you honestly whether replacement makes sense. Call 647-952-2311.

How do you paint, stain, or finish a fiberglass door?

Fiberglass doors can be painted or stained, but they need proper prep first, cleaning the surface and using a primer made for fiberglass, not wood. Stains made for fiberglass grain textures give the best wood-look results. For a finish that actually lasts, we recommend having it done professionally rather than as a DIY project.

How do you install hinges, handles, or hardware on a fiberglass door?

Fiberglass doors come pre-mortised for hinges and hardware, so cutting into the door yourself isn't recommended and can void the warranty. Hardware should be installed by someone who knows how fiberglass doors are built. EHI Custom Doors installs all hardware as part of every door we build.

Is foam showing around the window seal on a fiberglass door normal?

A small amount of foam around a glass insert is normal, it's part of how the seal is sealed and insulated. But it should be applied evenly, not gapped or messy. If it looks uneven, that's a sign of rushed manufacturing and worth raising with whoever built the door.

Can I convert a non-standard door opening to a standard size myself?

It's possible, but it means reframing the opening, which affects how well the new door seals and insulates. If it's not framed correctly, you'll deal with drafts and leaks later. Unless you have real framing experience, this is worth having a professional handle, or better yet, just have the door custom built to fit your existing opening.

Prehung or custom made, which is better for an entry door?

A prehung door works well if your opening is a standard size, it's already set in its own frame and quicker to install. If your opening is non-standard, or you want a specific size, design, or finish, custom made is the better fit since it's built around your exact home instead of the other way around.

Is it a problem to replace a lightweight door with a heavier fiberglass entry door?

It can need more than a straight swap. A fiberglass entry door is heavier than a thin or hollow door, so it needs hinges rated for that weight and a frame solid enough to support it. If your old frame and hardware weren't built for that load, we'll recommend a matched frame and slab. Send us photos and we'll tell you what your opening needs.

Are expensive custom fiberglass doors worth the extra cost compared to big-box options?

Big-box doors are cheaper because they're mass-produced in standard sizes with basic hardware. A custom door costs more upfront, but it's built to fit your exact opening, with better core insulation and hardware, and it's backed by a real warranty. For a door you'll use every day for decades, that difference usually pays off.
